Title: A child with HIV infection accompanied with severe acute malnutrition: A case report

Abstract

Approximately 740 children are infected with HIV and approximately 274 children will die of AIDS every day in 2022 due to lack of access to HIV prevention, care and treatment services. Mortality of HIV-infected children with severe acute malnutrition is 30.4% in Africa. Case: A girl aged 1 year 8 months was hospitalized because of diarrhea accompanied by vomiting, mouth ulcers and fever repeatedly before admission. He had been hospitalized for HIV infection one month before and was treated with ARVs. His mother had been treated with ARVs. Physical examination showed that the child was severely ill, malnourished accompanied by stunting, and the child was conscious with normal vital signs. There are canker sores. Signs of nutritional marasmus are an old man's face, wasting, and baggy pants. Laboratory results showed anemia, positive antigen and antibody to HIV infection, and low CD4. He was treated with ARVs, Cotrimoxazole, and management of malnutrition and diarrhea. Summary: A 1 year 8 month old girl was reported with HIV infection complicated by severe malnutrition, acute diarrhea, oral candidiasis, and anemia due to chronic disease. The diagnosis was based on clinical and laboratory findings. Management focuses on HIV therapy and its comorbidities. The prognosis is poor.

Biography

Sidrah Darma is a doctor who graduated from the faculty of medicine, Indonesian Muslim University (FK UMI) in 2013. After several years as a general practitioner, she then continued specialist medical school at Hasanuddin University and graduated as a pediatrician in 2021. Apart from working as a doctor, she has also been a lecturer in the nutrition and pediatrics department at the FK UMI since 2015.
